Clear zinc chromate.

Zinc chromate zn cr o 4 is a chemical compound containing the chromate anion appearing as odorless yellow powder or yellow green crystals but when used for coatings pigments are often added. Zinc chromate is a corrosion resistant agent that is added to certain coatings. It is used industrially in chromate conversion coatings having been developed by the ford motor company in the 1920s. Darker coatings generally provide more corrosion resistance.

Zinc plating in general can be broken into two primary steps. Yellow or clear zinc chromate coatings yellow and clear sometimes called white essentially perform the same function as a superior corrosion inhibitor for your metal parts. Clear chromate withstands 16 24 hours in neutral salt spray while yellow withstands 96 hours.

Additionally zinc chromate is highly toxic thus protecting the surface from proliferation of organic matter. The deposit is a pleasing finish in itself however it is also an excellent base for paint.
